Since 1997, when the first Harry Potter book was published and became an immediate success, JK Rowling, the books creator has been in various talks with Warner Bros, who were to distribute the films. They were to turn Harry Potter's adventures from the books into the big screen saga. Contracts where drawn up for the filming company to produce three films and then maybe more, if the first three were a big success.
Chris Columbus, who has produced films such as Home Alone and its sequel, Home Alone 2, was asked to direct the films. Steve Kloves was to write the scripts.
Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone was released in mid November in 2001. It was an instant success and broke all box office records across the world. It was, and still is the second biggest film money spinner in history taking nearly a billion dollars worldwide.
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets was released nearly a year to the day later. It also broke many box office records, but fell just short of the international cume the Philosopher's Stone took. However, it still stands as one of the biggest film money making spinners of all time.
The third installment of the boy wizard entitled Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is currently still in filming. It has been given a release date of 4th June 2004, in some places around the world such as the UK and USA.
